Ouch ouch ouch

Bruce Bethke:

"I had great hopes that the Internet would lead to a wonderful efflorescence of human creativity, but ten years on, in terms of information content, the non-commercial parts of the Internet are rapidly decaying into white noise.

"I never realized there were so very many people out there with so very little to say, and a burning, unquenchable desire to say it."

Belle de Jour

"It seemed like other bloggers were happy to have anyone in their club, so long as your hit stats don't outnumber theirs. But once they do, me-ow."

And I'd say thank you for the pressure.

Of course, only a few have to be exceptionally brilliant in what they blog. Otherwise, magiging run-of-the-mill ang "brilliant", at hindi na siya magiging exceptional.

It's just the nature of things.

But the democratization of ideas and freedom of speech--I think there's the value of the Internet. Sure, lots of white noise and mis- or disinformation, but then we as a civilization will adapt to this new media.

  2. Blogger Abaniko Says:

That's just the way it is. Like the world at large which is full of inconsequential things. But we have a CHOICE. We decide which things to ignore. In like manner, we can always not read what we don't like to read on the Net.

It’s no different from other media of expression. In the publishing world, so many authors think they have a lot to say and they churn out crappy books. We don’t need to read all of them. As to blogging, every blog will naturally attract a following. Shitty blogs magnetize shitty readers. We need variety, otherwise life would be boring.

two valid points from you, guys:

    1. As with communism which eventually collapsed, there has to be somebody superior enough to be the standard. Otherwise there is no point in striving for something that has been with us all along, or to be the embodiment of mediocrity and stay that way.

    2. Unless you are in a totalitarian state like Albania in the 80's, you have a choice to sift through the pile of white noise and subscribe to the one that stands out.

Except of course, if the sifting part tests your impatience as well.

Bethke is a humorist by the way.

A very perceptive thought...which is a reality on the blogging world!

Sige na nga! Ako na ang magdideretso sa iyo: Sky, wag kang mag-alala. The fact that your posts elicit such thinking reactions from your readers is proof that The White Papers is one of the standard-bearers in the blogging world. Nakanampooochah!

(P.S. -- Is my check in the mail na?)

mcvie: I'm contemplating a full entry on this. Pag may time. I've billed your one-peso check to the future (August 12, 2055). By then it will be worth 145.37 pesos. :D

  8. Blogger joelmcvie Says:

SKY: Can't you just make it retroactive? A peso is still a peso. (Desperate times talaga.)

Teka, teka, teka, parang pati ako nalito sa previous comment ko, ha! What I wanted to say was, ahhh, uhm, ay dedma na nga.
